IMPACT HOUSE, Brussels
Outdoor furniture ensemble
2023

The commission was to create an ensemble of different outdoor furniture pieces for an interior courtyard of a shared office and meeting space in the European quarter of Brussels: benches, tables, chairs and planters. Together with the client (a private foundation) and designer Georgius Tsoukalas of the Antwerp-based landscaping office Omgeving, we developed a design inspired by Japanese architecture. All elements are based on the repetition of a single format made from local ash wood (Fraxinus excelsior) that we harvested from the Sonian Forest. We used the special technique of torrefaction, which renders the wood extremely durable to outdoor conditions without any use of chemicals or petro-based products. The photos taken by Amber Vanbossel show the project after one season of natural greying.
